Details on the BBEST 2024 Event

A rich history

BBEST is organized every three years by the FAPESP Bioenergy Research Program (BIOEN), the Bioenergy Society (SBE), and the Brazilian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SBBq). After four successful editions of BBEST (2011, 2014, 2017, and 2020/2021), in 2024, the conference will be cohosted with the IEA Bioenergy Conference, becoming an unique opportunity to discuss advances in bioenergy around the world: BBEST & IEA Bioenergy 2024.

The IEA Bioenergy is a Technology Collaboration Program (TCP) created in 1978 by the International Energy Agency (IEA) with the aim of improving cooperation and information exchange between countries that have national programs in bioenergy research, development, and deployment. Twenty five countries plus the European Commission currently participate in IEA Bioenergy (http://www.ieabioenergy.com).

Bioenergy in Brazil

Brazil and, in particular, the State of São Paulo through its Research Foundation (FAPESP) have been making significant investments in research on bioenergy. FAPESP funds the Bioenergy Research Program (BIOEN), comprising hundreds of researchers from Universities and Research Centers in the State of São Paulo (for further information, see http://bioenfapesp.org). These investments are connected to a wide spectrum of R&D in bioenergy, public and private, representing the long tradition of Brazil in the sustainable production and use of biofuels and bioelectricity.

Global biofuels production has continued to increase over the last decade. The risks of the climate crisis, linked to fossil fuels use, capable of irreversibly changing the biosphere and human society are by now very clear. Brazil, as the fifth largest country in the world in terms of land area and seventh in terms of population, has strategic supplies of renewable energies, bioenergy included. However, the expansion of bioenergy worldwide will demand intense efforts in science, technology, policy, and innovation over the next few years. It is in the context of this global and national challenge that BBEST – IEA Bioenergy 2024 is being held.

The 2024 Event

BBEST & IEA Bioenergy 2024 will bring together important topics such as responsible land use, agricultural productivity, resilient multifunctional landscapes, harvesting technology, logistics and scale, development of biorefineries, emerging advanced bioproducts, materials, green chemicals, bioelectricity, biofuels for air, sea, and road transport, waste use for bioenergy production, strategies for the circular carbon economy, sustainability, and decarbonization of transportation. Additionally, in this edition, we will have a dedicated day to discuss policy and sustainability. We aim to debate the top bioenergy solutions, how to foster innovation through enhanced international cooperation in R&D and how to finance the bioenergy efforts. As in the previous editions of its End of Triennium Conference, IEA Bioenergy aims to gather a broad range of experts and stakeholders to discuss key topics related to the production and use of various types of bioenergy across different end-use sectors. BBEST & IEA Bioenergy 2024 will serve as a major venue for presentation and discussion of advances in international and Brazilian bioenergy research. The Conference aims at bringing together leading specialists and beginners, through a mix of plenary and invited presentations, posters, and special sessions.

Established investigators, young researchers, students, and professionals, both from academia and industry, are welcome to participate. A Call for Papers will be launched soon. The conference will also offer opportunities for companies and entrepreneurs to expand their networks, learn about new developments and potential innovations, explore financing alternatives, and discuss R&D collaborations with Universities and Research Centers.
